BOARD OF EDUCATION ELECTIONS
The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) Board of Education is comprised of 7 city-wide seats that are elected every 3 years. The election cycle is staggered so that each year either 2 or 3 seats are up for election. Candidates must declare for which of the seats they are running. A primary election is held (in February) when any seat has more than two candidates running. The regular election is held (in April) for the top two candidates for each seat from the primary election (or one candidate if there are no challengers). Madison is the only district in the state of Wisconsin to have their election process under this design.
Starting in 2017, MPAL began submitting questions to board candidates to better understand their viewpoints on education issues including Advanced Learning. We aim to ask questions that haven't been covered by other questionnaires or forums and we change the questions each year to reflect current issues. Working with the Board of Education has been a priority for MPAL as the Board is responsible for ensuring the policies, plans and practices of the district are effectively implemented.
