"Talented and Gifted" is the traditional term to describe students who possess unique talents or abilities in a particular area compared to other students of the same age. The National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC) provides the following definition.
“Gifted individuals are those who demonstrate outstanding levels of aptitude (defined as an exceptional ability to reason and learn) or competence (documented performance or achievement in top 10% or rarer) in one or more domains. Domains include any structured area of activity with its own symbol system (e.g., mathematics, music, language) and/or set of sensorimotor skills (e.g., painting, dance, sports).” -
"Advanced Learning" takes a broader approach in trying to determine which students at any given grade level in any given subject could benefit from additional academic challenge and instruction beyond grade level standards. This includes students already exhibiting high levels of achievement and students with the potential to achieve more highly if provided the opportunities and support to do so.
