Response from Ali Muldrow
(1) Do you think Advanced Learning is adequately included in the district priorities detailed in the Strategic Framework and School Improvement Plan processes?
For the last three years I have taught a course called foundations of leadership in partnership with MMSD and UW Madison. It is an advanced learners course for students who are advanced learners in the areas of leadership it is also based on the experiences of LGBTQ youth of color and allows young people from high schools all over Madison to have the opportunity to learn from diverse communities and recognize the contributions people of all backgrounds have made to leadership.
Next year this class may be taught for the first time at East high school and I am committed to expanding access to leadership opportunities for students who are advanced learners in the areas of leadership moving forward.
MMSD has a long history of failing to recognize advance learner abilities in students of color, students with disabilities, LGBTQ students, and students living in poverty. I am committed to enhancing the tools we use to recognize advanced learners to be more inclusive of diverse students.
If so, where do you see it?
If not, why isn’t it included?
I think that MMSD needs to invest in providing greater advanced learner opportunities to Student who are advanced learners in the areas of performing arts and leadership. And in elementary school particularly I think we need to work to ensure students can access advanced learning opportunities without being removed from their classrooms.
(2) How should the district invest time and resources to meet the instructional needs of students who could benefit from challenge above grade level standards while continuing the critical work of helping other students reach grade level proficiency? Will you make this a priority for our district if elected?
I have said throughout my campaign that there is no one-size-fits-all approach Education. We have to make sure we are meeting the needs of the students. Advanced learners when unserved struggle in school in similar ways to special education students. Putting the needs of each individual student at the center of the learning experiences they navigate is absolutely my priority. Recognizing the brilliance of our young people is to the benefit of our entire community and I will absolutely advocate for the inclusion and support of students who are advanced learners. I also think it's important that we understand that students can struggle in one area and being an advance learner in another area. It's really important to students who are struggling in school that they are also seen for the things they do really well, investing in advanced learners programming is an opportunity to recognize nuanced capacities of our students and provide meaningful support to young people as explore their own gifts and talents.
